Stop complaining. The world doesn't owe you anything.
So many people are saying that they were never given the break that they deserve or if they had the right people they would be in a better place or position. Let me break it to you... YOU ARE WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO BE. You make your own destiny. Not your manager, not your friends, not your bandmates. YOU. It may take a little longer getting there but if you work on it... it's definitely gonna happen. Maybe not exactly how you picture it was going to be, but you have to learn how to appreciate what you have. You have to see the beauty that is now. See the good and positive in everything that is happening. Don't dwell on negativity. It's only going to bring you down.
I have been in the music industry for... weeeeeelll.... a long time (let's not think about it too much, exactly how long... LOL!) I have done pretty much everything, lounge singer, girl group, back-up singer, commercial singing, sing for a political campaign jingle, sing and dance, be the band in a talk show a-la David Letterman, theatre singing, released albums, join a singing contest, session for some of the best band in the industry. You do what you can to survive. But early on, I have decided that this is what I wanted to do, and this is my passion, and so there may be a lot of detours, but eventually, and a loooot of years after, I am still doing what I love to do... Sing.
Sure there may be what you can call "shortcuts", like maybe wearing a 2 piece bikini while singing Whitney Houston songs (RIP Whitney, God bless her soul) will definitely get you gigs, But for how long? And will you earn the respect of your peers by doing that? (Take note: you do need the respect of your peers if you intend to be in the industry for a long time. Word of mouth travels a long way.) Plus shortcuts, are exactly what they are "short cuts", you will not learn all the intricacies of your craft if you do it that way. There is so much to learn in doing it the right way. The mentality nowadays would be "Why do I have to learn to be good in singing? When I can just wear something skimpy and I am good to go" or the ever so popular mentality : "It's ok if you don't sing it right, The audience wouldn't know the difference". But you would know, and if you can live with that, you don't have to read my blog, carry on with your life with contentment. But if you wish to know my opinion on this continue reading...
I have nothing against skimpy clothing, I also wear them occasionally (not 2 piece bikinis though... I have to draw a line somewhere... hehehehe... plus I don't think the audience or my bandmates will like it very much... hahaha!), whenever I feel that, that is what's needed for the gig. But you see, whenever I wear that, I feel obligated to prove myself more. I personally feel that I am pressured to make people see beyond the clothes, and actually listen. I feel that what you wear is a part of your performance. And i think that is a rule in general. BEYONCE doesn't wear a panty and a bra when she is doing a serious song. I don't think she ever will... and I agree with her. What people need to get is, clothes are "part" of the performance. There are other factors in a performance that should also be taken in congruence, to make it a whole. And guess what? ACTUAL SINGING is also part of that. The physicality or how you move on stage is another, your spiels... the list goes on. I discussed this on my earlier blogpost about passion so I am not gonna delve into that. Now I am not gonna tag myself as an "expert" on all things. What I am saying is coming from my heart... and more than a decade of experience.
This is what I know from experience: Learn your craft. Be passionate in what you do. Never give up hope. And if you are going to do something, do it RIGHT. The universe will answer and you will be exactly where you want to be.
